Local Pensions Meetings
Over the past few weeks myself and other local NUT officers have been getting out to schools across the county to meet with teachers and discuss the pensions campaign. We have a had a great response from members concerned about the impact of government proposals on their pension and the long term impact on the profession as a whole.
This last point is absolutely vital. Proposals which will see the appeal of teaching as a career significantly lessened and which will cause a recruitment and retention crisis among younger teachers, while forcing those near the end of their career to work on into their late sixties, cannot fail to impact on the quality of education provided.
As teachers, we want to do what is best for the young people in our care and we know that these changes will have the opposite effect.
We have also been asked a number of questions by members concerned about taking strike action. Answers to many of the most common questions can be found in the NUT Q&A document here. I will also be adding some specific responses, based on questions we have been asked at meetings, over the next few days. If you are an NUT rep, look out for more information arriving tomorrow morning before school.
Looking forward to meeting with members in Didcot tomorrow and Banbury and Wheatley next week (details to follow).
